Understanding the Health Risks of Conventional Candles

Before we dive into all of the benefits of natural soy wax candles we need to better understand what makes up a conventional candle. Traditional big box store candles are made of paraffin wax and often release harmful toxins such as benzene and toluene when burned. These pollutants can negatively impact indoor air quality and contribute to respiratory issues.

Fortunately, natural alternatives like soy candles offer a healthier option for those that do not want to give up candles entirely.

Advantages of Choosing Healthy Soy Candles

Soy candles have been very popular as of late and for good reasons. Firstly, soy wax is derived from soybean oil which comes from soy plants. This makes soy wax a renewable and sustainable resource.

Secondly, soy candles burn longer due to a lower melt point so your money spent on a soy candle will go farther than one spent on a cheaper paraffin candle.

Thirdly, soy candles burn more cleanly due to their natural plant based origin. Traditional

paraffin candles will release a black soot into the air which can also appear on the edge of the jar. I don't know about you but we'd prefer not to release black soot into our home.

Lastly, soy candles are considered biodegradable making them the perfect eco-friendly choice.

Ways to Identify a Healthy Candle

When looking to purchase a candle it is important to distinguish between healthier options and the less healthy alternatives.

Neon sign saying and breathe

The first thing to look for is labeling that says; "All Natural" or "100% Soy Wax". Often times companies will use a limited amount of soy along with a majority of paraffin wax and brand their candle as a soy blend. Anytime you see a 'blend' when it comes to waxes you know the company is using a less healthy and less expensive material to better their margins at the expense of your health.

Next you will want to keep an eye on what is being used to scent the candle. If you see verbiage that talks about synthetic fragrances or perfume then you can be confident cheaper, more toxic scents are being used. We only use "Clean Scents" by Candlescience as a way to provide the best performance and healthiest option.

Lastly and usually least talked about is the wick. This is not a major issue now a days due to regulations but in the past wicks were made with lead. Be sure to choose an all natural cotton wick that is lead-free if noted.

Choosing the Right Size Candle for your Home

Considering both size and scent when choosing a candle should be some of the most important factors after identifying your Healthy candle.

For smaller rooms like a bathroom or small office, opt for smaller candles that will prevent an overpowering scent in the room. Our 3.5oz tins or wax melts are perfect for these spaces.

In larger rooms such as a living room or kitchen it's better to go bigger for your home. You'll need a candle that has ample surface area to create a big enough melt pool to help release the fragrance into the room at the appropriate rate. Our 9oz candles are designed just for this!

In regards to scent just think about the ambiance you want to create in your space. If you are looking for a relaxing space a Lavender scent does the trick. Or maybe you want create and upbeat and invigorating smell to your house in that case choosing something with citrus in it will work.
